Like the larger school, it offers a breadth of academic programs at all levels. Like the smaller schools, it has a special focus on the area where it is situated, the Jackson metropolitan area. In addition, because of its history and mission, Jackson State University embraces the role of providing an education not only for well-prepared high school graduates, but also encourage the growth and development of bright, hard-working students who require a rigorous yet nurturing academic environment.
HistorySince 1877, Jackson State University has been providing young men and women opportunities that will empower them to succeed in an increasingly complex world. As the Urban University of Mississippi, Jackson State emphasizes public service programs designed to enhance quality of life and seek solutions to urban problems in the physical, social, intellectual, and economic environments. Located in Jackson, the capital city and the cultural, political, geographic and business center of Mississippi, the campus is a scenic 125-acre tract only five minutes from downtown and less than twenty minutes from Jackson International Airport. Tree-lined walkways and a large central plaza add to the atmosphere of a major university in a bustling capital city. In addition to numerous year-round activities on the campus, the city offers plenty of concerts and other cultural events, and shopping centers and malls provide exciting excursions in search of great bargains. Museums, theaters, parks and restaurants abound. A comprehensive university, Jackson State offers degree programs from the baccalaureate to the doctoral level. First-time college enrollees as well as non-traditional students can choose from a broad range of majors. The School of Business, one of only six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Schools of Business accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), offers degrees in accounting, business administration, business education, economics, finance, management, marketing and office administration. While Jackson State remains proud of its heritage as one of America's leading HBCUs, it has become an increasingly diverse institution offering a myriad of opportunities for personal growth and achievement. The more than 6,200 students enrolled at Jackson State come from every county in Mississippi as well as from across the United States and from numerous foreign countries. The faculty numbers more than 400 talented educators with diverse backgrounds. These teaching and research professionals are drawn to Jackson State from prestigious institutions around the world and seventy percent hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their fields. The student/faculty ratio is 17:1. Exceptional opportunities are the norm at Jackson State.
